Ann raised her hand to her eyes, covering them from the shiny sun. At her best friends laughter, Jenna, she turned, smiling.
"Come on, the light turned green," her other friend, Sandy said. Still smiling, Ann followed, walking quickly to get to the other side of the street.
"I can't believe we're finally going to see this movie," Jenna said from her left.
"Gosh, I know," Ann said, as she stepped onto the street block and looked over to the Starbucks nearby. Suddenly her heart stopped. There he was. The only guy who had swept her off her feet. She noticed he was by himself, reading a book or at the moment changing songs in his gray iPod nano. It'd been years since she had properly talked to him face to face. They'd messaged and emailed each other. But had not seen each other since about a year ago. Even then they still hadn't spoken, mostly her fault. She didn't know what she was supposed to say to the guy whose heart she'd broken.
"I'll meet you guys at the theater,  I want to..." she heard her say, glancing once more to make sure it really was him.
"What?" Jenna asked, stopping. Her gaze followed Ann's and immediately spotted, Evan. "Ohh, I get it," she said.
Ann gave Jenna a warning glance. Of course, she understood, after all it had been Jenna to catch them making out in the empty classroom years ago. Jenna said nothing, but grinning, pulled Sandy towards the theater. Ann stayed there for a moment, but then quickly moved towards Evan. She knew if she stopped or turned around to where her friends had just gone, she wouldn't be able to go through it.
As she neared him, she began to feel awkward. What was she going to say? Would he even want to talk to her? What if he was just waiting for a friend or worse, his girlfriend? Ann wasn't dumb, Evan always had a girl.
Ann taped his shoulder from behind, once she got to his table. Moving slowly to his side, she smiled down at him nervously. "Hey," she added shakily.
Evan looked up, surprised, but smiled back at her. "Ann?" he asked. He stood up, before motioning to the empty seat next to him. "Want to sit down?"
Ann looked at him, he looked so much different now than when they were kids. Well they hadn't been kids, but it did feel like it. She remembered the time he tricked her into looking for his sister, just so he could spend time with her. Or the night they spent the whole night kissing under the stars. Then there was that time at the carnival, where they hadn't seen each other for two days and once they got on the ride, they couldn't stop kissing until Ann's uncle came to pick her up. But her most favorite memory was running through the rain, before he stopped her and just kissed her softly. She wondered where all those memories had gone... or what he did with them. She still had them, they would sometimes come out of nowhere and flood her brain. Those had been the days... but now, here they were looking at each other three years later and it seemed as if those memories had never happened.
As she sat down, she realized she was still smiling at him. "Hi," she said again before laughing. "This is just a real surprise, I didn't think I'd see you here."
This was true. Shortly after their breakup, Ann had moved out of the neighborhood. She tended to come a lot, hoping to see him. But after a year of being let down, she gave up. So the fact that he was here, was just unbelievable.
"Yeah me neither," he said as he took off his headphones and put them away. "It's a nice day... to be outside."
"It is," she agreed. "It's the kind of day when someone just goes outside to play soccer," she added after a while. Ann still remembered going to all the soccer practices and games, just to see him.
Evan caught her eye before nodding and looking away.
"I'm sorry," Ann said quickly, "I just saw you and wanted to say hello, so I guess I should get going."
She was about to stand up when Evan quickly shook his head, "No, I'm sorry. I just... I'm going through a rough time right now."
"Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't know."
"How would you? We haven't spoken in months," he said, giving her smile as if to reassure her things were okay.
Ann tried to smile back, but instead ended up shrugging. "It just gets hard," she said softly.
"Hard?" Evan asked, confused.
Ann looked away, why was she bringing it up. This was so dumb. They had happened and now over. He had moved on and she had too. As he had let her know, she'd been the one to let go.
"Never mind, I mean... I've just been busy." 
"Oh," Evan said, nodding. "So what are you doing here?"
"I came to watch that new movie," she said motioning towards the theater on the other side. "Want to come?"
For a moment, Ann thought Evan was going to give her an excuse and say no. After all why would he want to spend time with her? It's over, she reminded herself.
"Sure," he exclaimed, surprising her. "Let's go," he said standing up and waiting for her.
"Right," she said, still confused. Was this really happening? This surely had to be a dream. Or maybe it had been a dream... that was finally coming alive.
